Shanghai Old Mahjong — Rules by Ching Lee
Traditional no-bonus version: 136 tiles (Characters, Dots, Bamboos, Winds and Dragons); 13 concealed tiles per player, with the dealer drawing a 14th tile to begin. This is not Taiwan 16-Tile Mahjong. In this digital adaptation the aim is four melds plus one pair, Seven Pairs or Thirteen Orphans, with an ordinary minimum of 11 fan or a qualifying special Cheng Hu (成葫) hand. The optional eight Flowers/Seasons are excluded here.
Basic play: Take turns drawing one tile and discarding one. You may Chow a run from the player just before you, Pung an identical discard with two matching tiles, and Kong with three or four matching tiles. Declare a win with the Win! button when the displayed rules permit it. Pass declines an offer. The computer plays the other three seats.
Fan and Hu (葫): One fan is 500 virtual chips; two fan equal 1,000 hu. To settle an ordinary qualifying win, divide total fan by two, round halves up, then multiply by 1,000. Thus 11 or 12 fan each pay 6,000 hu. Special high-difficulty hands have fixed Cheng Hu amounts, replacing—rather than adding to—ordinary fan scores.
| 1 fan (selected examples) | Dealer, 2/5/8 pair, one concealed pung, one kong |
| 2 fan (selected examples) | All Chows, All Simples, No Fives, Missing Suit, matching chows |
| 3 fan (selected examples) | Concealed Hand, two concealed pungs, two kongs |
| 7 fan (selected examples) | Half Flush, All Five Categories, Seven Pairs, concealed self-draw special bonus |
| 9 fan (selected examples) | All Pungs, Pure Straight |
| 20,000 hu (examples) | Little Three Dragons, Wan Fu, Chang Lu, Yuan Shou, Three Wind Pungs |
| 40,000 hu (examples) | Full Flush, Big Three Dragons, Little Four Winds |
| 50,000 hu | Full Flush All Pungs, Big Three Dragons All Pungs |
| 60,000 hu (examples) | Thirteen Orphans, All Terminals and Honors Pungs |
| 80,000 hu (examples) | Big Four Winds, All Honors Pungs |
Settlement: On self-draw, all three opponents pay the winner the full hand value. On a discarded-tile win, the discarder pays the full amount and each other nonwinning player pays half. Every player starts with 300,000 practice chips; there is no gambling or real money.
Important limits: This is an introductory digital adaptation, not a complete formal implementation of every original rule. Some rare named hands, liability/payment exceptions, robbed-kong cases, kong recovery, full eight-round seat exchanges, and dealer continuation charges are not automated. The game uses provisional logic when overlapping special hands qualify; please refer to the original document for authoritative scoring.
