四角號碼檢字法的歷史 History of the Four-Corner Method

四角號碼檢字法由王雲五先生創制，讓使用者即使不知道漢字讀音，也不確定部首，仍能根據字形快速查字。 The Four-Corner Method was developed by Wang Yun-wu so that a character could be located from its visual form—even when its pronunciation and radical were unknown.

1925 王雲五發表「號碼檢字法」。 Wang Yun-wu introduced his numerical character-indexing method.
1926 《四角號碼檢字法》出版，方法逐漸應用於字典與資料編排。 The Four-Corner Method was published and became a practical tool for dictionaries and information organization.

核心方法 Core Method

①左上Upper-left → ②右上Upper-right → ③左下Lower-left → ④右下Lower-right

把四個角的筆形分成0–9十類，再組成四位號碼；同一組號碼可能對應多個漢字，部分字典會加入第五位「附角」協助區分。 The shapes at the four corners are classified into digits 0–9 and combined into a four-digit code. Because several characters may share a code, some dictionaries add an optional fifth “supplementary corner” digit.

一橫二垂三點捺，
點下帶橫變零頭；
叉四插五方塊六，
七角八八小是九。

The digits represent ten broad corner shapes: head, horizontal, vertical, dot, crossing, piercing, square, corner, split-eight, and small-shaped strokes.

例子 Examples

  • 端＝0212
  • 教＝4844
  • 十＝4000 — 同一筆通常不重複取碼。A stroke is generally not coded twice.
  • 國＝6015 — 外框字的下角可能取框內筆形。For enclosure characters, lower corners may be taken from inside the frame.

先認識四角號碼 ｜ Learn the Four-Corner Method

四角號碼是依漢字外形查字的方法：看左上、右上、左下、右下四個角，再把筆形轉成0–9。 The Four-Corner Method reads a character by looking at the upper-left, upper-right, lower-left, and lower-right corners, then converting those shapes into digits 0–9.
